Wapato Park Property Acquisition
- Status
- Funded in 2000
With the acquisition of these two small parcels, the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma will be able to expand Wapato Park and complete access around Wapato Lake. Wapato Park is an 80-acre facility southeast of the Tacoma Mall area. After Point Defiance and Ruston Way, Wapato Park is the most heavily used park in Tacoma. It is convenient to many Tacoma neighborhoods east of the interstate, including many residential areas associated with nearby Ft. Lewis and McChord military bases. Wapato Park’s key feature is the 30-acre lake in its center. With the acquisition of the last two private parcels on the lake’s west side, a lakeshore trail loop can be completed and the park’s west side opened up for use. Recently renovated with an earlier WWRP grant, the park has a fishing pier, volleyball courts, swim beach, picnic facilities and play areas. The additional property, when developed, will also provide opportunity for a small parking area.
Location
Take I-5 to the 72nd Street Exit. Turn east off the exit onto 72nd Street and follow it to Alaska Street and turn north. Property is on the east side of the street, in Tacoma.
