Thurston Co./Lacey Athletic Complex Acq.

Status
Funded in 2000
WWRP Applicant: Thurston County Parks & Rec WWRP Category: Local Parks WWRP Grant: $282,802 Applicant Match: $2,299,934 Project Type: Acquisition County: Thurston  Legislative District: 20th

Thurston County and the City of Lacey are seeking assistance to acquire a 67-acre site east of Lacey, for development of a much-needed regional sports complex. Like many other communities, the Lacey and Thurston areas have seen explosive growth in youth and community athletics, causing a severe shortage of play and practice facilities. The proposed site is ideal for developing a regional sports complex. It is level, and large enough for an estimated seven soccer fields and five baseball/softball fields, restroom facilities, trails, picnic area and other support facilities. The site is located approximately one mile south of Interstate 5 off Marvin Rd SE and Steilacoom Road, locally known as “Mushroom Corner” for the commercial mushroom farm which operated there for many years. The site is close in proximity to the Nisqually Middle School and the privately-operated Bucknell Athletic Park. The project is a partnership between Thurston County and the City of Lacey, both sharing the cost of acquisition, development, and operation equally. The project meets demands for additional athletic facilities as defined by both the County and City Comprehensive Park Plans.
