Stavis NRCA Riparian 2006

Status
Funded in 2007
WWRP Applicant: Dept of Natural Resources WWRP Category: Riparian Protection WWRP Grant: $944,580 Project Type: Acquisition County: Kitsap  Legislative District: 35th

The Department of Natural Resources will use this grant to acquire 132 acres of riparian land near Seabeck as part of the Stavis Natural Resources Conservation Area. The land is threatened by development and is a crucial part of an area that contains the highest quality occurrence of a rare forest community and a variety of high quality wildlife habitats. Stavis Creek, which runs through the site, is one of the best remaining Hood Canal salmon spawning habitats and is a designated recovery area for Hood Canal summer chum, which are threatened with extinction. The land hosts an active bald eagle nest, a small great blue heron rookery, breeding mountain quail, Chinook salmon, cougars, and black bears. The property will greatly enhance the long-term viability and quality of wildlife habitat in a still-intact, functional riparian and forested landscape.

RCO Project Number: 06-2130
