Squalicum Fields Acquisition

This acquisition in the city of Bellingham will create a major athletic field and park complex and protect important habitat for salmon. The 42 acre site will result in a facility blending active sports with restored natural areas and passive recreation. It will connect residential areas with trails and function as an element of the Squalicum and Bay-to-Baker Trail Greenways. The project will expand an existing park and trail system, creating an assembly of over 47 acres. A secondary objective is to protect, preserve, and enhance the riparian lands on Squalicum Way -- an important scenic drive along Squalicum Creek, Bellingham's most productive salmon stream. The site is centrally located in the urban area and can be well served by transit, trails, and a major arterial street. The main 35-acre tract is a former sand and gravel pit mined to form a well-drained, amphitheater-like bowl"" with vertical separation from the surrounding neighborhoods. A significant water right and extensive springs can be used for water features operations and fishery enhancements. The site is ideal for athletic fields and also offers a setting of restored wetlands, forested slopes, fishways, fish and wildlife habitat, and trails.

Exit I-5 at Exit #256. Turn left/South on Meridian Street. After c. 1/2 mile, turn right/West on Squalicum Way. Proceed c. 1 mile to site. 35 acre tact is on North side of Squalicum Way opposite West Street intersection. 7 acre tract begins on South side of Squalicum Way, extending Southwest from West Street.

The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
