The last remaining natural Western Pond Turtle site in the state is located in Klickitat County, within the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife proposes to increase the existing 180 acre pond turtle site by purchasing 15 additional acres used by the turtles for nesting and travel. This site is also used as the nursery area for pond turtles prior to reintroduction to other sites around the state through a Woodland Park Zoo/University of Washington program. Purchase of this property will incorporate all known critical habitat for this turtle population into public ownership - providing nesting, hibernation, and foraging elements.

Traveling east on Highway 14, turn left onto Old Highway 8 (Lyle-White Salmon Road). Turn right on Biggers Road. Property is on the right starting at the corner of the Old Highway 8 and Biggers Road.

What is the WWRP?

The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
