Smith Prairie Farmland - Ebey's Reserve
- Status
- Funded in 2007
Island County will use this grant to protect 66.5 acres of farmland at the southern entrance of the nationally significant Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve by purchasing conservation easements. The property has been a seed orchard for nearly 30 years and is part of Smith Prairie, which is a natural prairie with productive soils. Prairie soils in the reserve are highly valued for growing crops, such as squash and corn. Protecting this historic farmland is critical to the historic and agricultural integrity of the reserve, and conservation of productive prairie soil, scenic rural views and wildlife habitat. Island County will contribute $390,850 from a federal grant.
What is the WWRP?
The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
