Similkameen Connector Trail Phase I
- Status
- Funded in 2005
The Similkameen Connector Trail Phase 1 is the first step in the overall development of a nonmotorized trail that will serve as a connector to the Pacific Northwest Trail system and the extensive trail system within Okanogan County. This Phase 1 project will acquire eighteen (18) properties either through easements or fee simple, develop a seven mile section of trail, and construct a trailhead at Nighthawk. The trail site occupies a level abandoned railroad grade along the south side of the Similkameen River in a natural and scenic habitat that offers spectacular views of the river and of the Cascade Range in the Pasayten Wilderness. The trailhead in Nighthawk will serve as one of the two planned access points. The trail begins in the historic mining town of Nighthawk, runs parallel to the Similkameen River, to a tunnel. Future development will take the trail through the tunnel past the historic 1907 Enloe Dam over a girder bridge and into the Town of Oroville where a second trailhead will eventually be located. Partners in this project include the Pacific Northwest Trail Association, private clubs, and groups who have requested a trail for hiking, bicycling, and equestrian use.
