Status
Pending Legislative Action
WWRP Applicant: Skagit County WWRP Category: Farmland Preservation WWRP Grant: $88,600 Applicant Match: $88,600 Project Type: Acquisition County: Skagit  Legislative District: 10th

If this grant is funded, Skagit County will place a conservation easement on the Olson farm. This farm has been in the family for several generations and has now come back to just one owner. It is located to the east of I-5 on the edge of the Mount Vernon City Urban Growth Area (UGA) and on Britt Slough. A variety of crops are grown and rotated to ensure good soil tilth. The crops include potatoes, wheat, corn, peas, seed crops, nursery stock and pasture for beef stock. The slough provides water and some habitat to nesting birds and the small amount of wetland is keep unfarmed. The Olson Family Farm is susceptible to conversion due to its proximity to urban services and wonderful views The Farmland Legacy Advisory Committee sees this property as a strategic property with respect to blocking the expansion of the city limits into valuable farmland.

RCO Project Number: 12-1526

State Senators cherry pick projects, ignore WWRP rankings

The State Senate's proposed budget slashes Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program funding to almost half of what Governor Inslee recommended while favoring poorly ranked projects over highly ranked ones. The WWRP's independent ranking system is the key to its years of success, ensuring only the best projects get funded. Take action & urge your legislators to restore full funding today!
