WWRP Applicant: Dept of Natural Resources WWRP Category: Natural Areas WWRP Grant: $68,077 Project Type: Acquisition County: Douglas  Legislative District: 12th

This proposal is to acquire properties for two Natural Area Preserves (NAPs) in the arid steppe zone of Eastern Washington. Dyer Haystacks and Two Steppe sites are located in Douglas County west of Coulee City. Both sites contain high quality native plant communities and wildlife habitat including riparian areas. The Dyer Haystacks site features three-tipped sagebrush-grassland habitat with spring and permanent ponds on a terrain strewn with glacial erratic rocks. Two Steppe consists of four arid land communities with excellent undisturbed original soil conditions. These sites are rare remnants of Eastern Washington’s pre-cultivation steppe environment.
