Mt St Helens/Toutle River Enhancement
- Status
- Funded in 2007
The Department of Fish and Wildlife will use this grant to restore habitat along the north fork of the Toutle River in the Mount Saint Helens Wildlife Area. The wildlife area was established for elk winter range and as habitat for coho salmon and steelhead, which are on the federal list of species threatened with extinction. In 1996-97 several hundred acres of elk winter range and salmon spawning and rearing habitat were lost. The department will use this grant to place logjams in the Toutle River and plants along its banks to prevent future losses of upland bank. Work will occur on 20 acres over a 3-mile area and will protect and enhance hundreds of acres of valuable uplands and several miles of fish-bearing streams. The department will contribute $10,000 in donated labor.
Location
From I-5, Exit 49 at Castle Rock travel East on SR 504 approximately 31 miles and turn right onto the Weyerhaeuser 3100 road (gated). The wildlife area is about 1 3/4 miles South beyond the gate.
