Mid-Columbia Shrub Steppe
- Status
- Funded in 2007
The Department of Fish and Wildlife will use this grant to buy 5,000 acres of habitat to connect four existing wildlife areas being managed for the protection and conservation of shrub-steppe dependant species. About 60 percent of shrub-steppe that existed in eastern Washington before European settlement has been lost, much of it converted to farmland and ranches. Much of the remaining shrub-steppe is highly fragmented, occurring as small blocks of agricultural fields surrounded by suburban development. Maintaining shrub-steppe for wildlife dependent on this habitat will depend on protecting the connectivity among existing patches. This purchase will benefit many species, including pygmy rabbit, sharp-tailed grouse, Washington ground squirrels and greater sage grouse.
What is the WWRP?
The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
