Iron Horse - Lake Easton Trestle

Status
Funded in 1999
WWRP Applicant: State Parks WWRP Category: Trails WWRP Grant: $695,000 Applicant Match: $40,000 Project Type: Development County: Kittitas  Legislative District: 13th

State Parks is seeking WWRP assistance to construct a bridge on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail at Lake Easton State Park near Cle Elum in Kittitas County. The John Wayne Pioneer Trail is one section of the Cross State Trail, a Parks Commission priority since 1973. This project will eliminate the last remaining gap along the length of the trail from King County to Ellensburg in Kittitas County. The new bridge will be 375 feet long and will cross both the Yakima River and an active railroad line. Currently, trail users must make a 2.5 mile detour on county roads to get around this obstacle. When completed, the John Wayne Pioneer Trail will provide trail users with a continuous trail for about 60 miles. The trail is used year-round by a variety of users including equestrians, hikers, bicyclists, and cross county skiers. Considerable support is provided by local and statewide volunteer groups.

RCO Project Number: 98-1082

Location

The Lake Easton Trestle is located where the Yakima River enters Lake Easton. The trestle is three quarters of a mile west of the town of Easton.
