Iron Horse Trail is one of the state's premiere east-west mainline trails. State Parks is developing the facility in segments. This development project in Kittitas County will improve the trail surface from South Cle Elum to Ellensburg, approximately twenty-five miles on the Iron Horse Trail. Other improvements include installing safety railings on eighteen bridge structures, developing new trailheads at Faust Road and the Fairgrounds, improving the Thorp Trailhead with a restroom, and providing landscape screening and a primitive camp unit with four to six campsites at Taneum Creek.

Location

The project can be accessed at the trailhead at South Cle Elum or at the Waters Street/JWPT intersection in the N W section of Ellensburg. The trail parallels the Yakima River between South Cle Elum and Ellensburg.

What is the WWRP?

The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
