Discovery Park - Capehart Inholding Acq
- Status
- Funded in 2007
Seattle will use this grant to acquire 23 acres, called the Capehart Housing area in Discovery Park, to restore the area to a natural setting. Discovery Park, Seattle's largest park, was created in 1972 from a former army base. At that time, the federal government kept a number of developed parcels within the park and on its edge, and later sold this inholding to a developer for high-end housing. The thought of a large housing complex in the midst of a major park touched off public opposition. Seattle has an agreement with the developer to remove all structures. After acquisition, Seattle will remove roads and utilities. Seattle will contribute $10.6 million in cash, conservation futures, and a grant.
What is the WWRP?
The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
