Des Moines Sports Park Acquisition

Status
Funded in 1999
WWRP Applicant: Des Moines Parks & Rec Dept WWRP Category: Local Parks WWRP Grant: $500,000 Applicant Match: $1,105,556 Project Type: Acquisition County: King  Legislative District: 33rd

The City of Des Moines requests WWRP aid to purchase 15 acres of land for the future development of its Sports Park. The proposed acquisition site is the last undeveloped property in Des Moines large enough and flat enough to accommodate an active field sports recreation facility. Potential future development plans include both soccer and ball fields, along with needed support facilities such as restrooms and parking. Currently, Des Moines has only three sports fields to meet the needs of all its residents. The combined number of city and school fields is woefully insufficient to accommodate league sports participation. This means that adults and children either don’t get to play, or have to travel to other communities. In 1996, the Des Moines City Council endorsed land acquisition for sports fields as a top priority.

RCO Project Number: 98-1137
