Cypress Island Natural Area 00

Status
Funded in 2001
WWRP Applicant: Dept of Natural Resources WWRP Category: Natural Areas WWRP Grant: $2,471,411 Project Type: Acquisition County: Skagit  Legislative District: 40th

This project in Skagit County acquires privately-owned waterfront properties on Cypress Island which are threatened with conversion to incompatible and/or ecologically irreversible uses. Cypress Island is a unique natural area due to its large size, ecological diversity, and level of existing protection. Cypress Island has no infrastructure or ferry service, and limited development, all which help increase protection. Ninety-two percent of the island is already owned and managed by DNR under Natural Area Preserve or Natural Resource Conservation Area designation. Additional funding is necessary in order to actively pursue acquisition of these remaining undeveloped lands. The threat of conversion is high due to rising property values in the San Juan Islands and the attractiveness of Cypress Island for vacation homes.

RCO Project Number: 00-1419

Location

On Cypress Island in Skagit County, west of Anacortes and east of the San Juan Islands.
