WWRP Applicant: Jefferson Co Public Works WWRP Category: Water Access WWRP Grant: $290,160 Applicant Match: $363,458 Project Type: Acquisition County: Jefferson  Legislative District: 24th

This project will secure 24 acres of waterfront and 3,000 feet of shoreline and tidelands for public access. The property is on the west shore of Port Townsend Bay, adjoining the Chimacum Creek Estuary. The site consists of a shallow, fine-aggregate beach with occasional areas of cobbles and a level shoreline bench, 50-300 feet in depth backed by a steep wooded slope. A paved county road provides direct access. The site will provide excellent shoreline access, small boat launching, paddling, fishing, shellfish harvest, and passive recreation opportunities. In addition to these uses, the purchase at Chimacum Creek will add rich interpretive opportunities, plus public access to the adjacent natural areas controlled by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, for a total of 7,500 lineal feet of shoreline and 4,500 feet of stream corridor. The shallow tidelands of the site contain eelgrass beds and nearshore habitat for a multitude of marine species, and saltwater rearing habitat for Hood Canal summer run chum salmon, listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Chimacum Creek is native habitat for chum, coho, steelhead and cutthroat.
