Status
Funded in 2003
WWRP Applicant: City of Buckley WWRP Category: Local Parks WWRP Grant: $235,225 Applicant Match: $235,225 Project Type: Development County: Pierce  Legislative District: 31st

This project in eastern Pierce County will create opportunities for residents of Buckley and surrounding areas such as Bonney Lake, Wilkeson, South Prairie, and Carbonado to access multiple-use youth and recreational facilities. The facility will install a playground area with equipment and a seated viewing area and skate park. It will serve the needs of skateboarders, roller bladers, and BMX bike riders. Additional features include a picnic area, paved parking, restroom facilities, a kiosk, and extensive landscaping. In the 1996 Buckley Park & Recreation Plan, the majority of survey respondents stated that additional park facilities are needed for active recreation. Respondents also indicated that the under-18 age group is in the greatest need of active recreation facilities, skateboarding, and bicycling opportunities. The park is directly adjacent to, and accessible from, the heavily-used Foothills Trail and State Route 410. The site is highly visible from all directions, located directly across from the public works facility and within two blocks of the police/fire departments. This park will fill a very large need in the area for outdoor recreation in a safe and accessible location as well as protect the historical significance, beauty and scenic environment of the abandoned railroad right of way that is now the State Route 410 corridor through Buckley. Buckley is donating the property for park purposes, valued at over $500,000.
