Blakely Harbor Park (WA)

Status
Funded in 1999
WWRP Applicant: Bainbridge Island Park Dist WWRP Category: Water Access WWRP Grant: $701,500 Applicant Match: $701,500 Project Type: Acquisition County: Kitsap  Legislative District: 23rd

The Bainbridge Island Park District is seeking to provide much needed public saltwater access and recreational opportunities by acquiring a sheltered cove on the east shore of Bainbridge Island, near the head of Blakely Harbor. The site will provide picnic areas, access for small craft such as kayaks, and water related recreational activities. Although close to major urban centers and road access, the 10 acre cove offers the feeling of tranquillity in a secluded waterfront setting with a pristine forested backdrop, a sandy shoreline and two upland natural areas. To the east, outstanding views of Seattle’s skyline are featured. Remnant historic features are also found here, dating from an era when Port Blakely was the largest mill and ship building facility in Puget Sound. Important bird habitat is found on and surrounding the site. The unique historical, visual, and environmental quality of the Blakely Harbor cove make it a compelling opportunity for the water access category.

State Senators cherry pick projects, ignore WWRP rankings

The State Senate's proposed budget slashes Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program funding to almost half of what Governor Inslee recommended while favoring poorly ranked projects over highly ranked ones. The WWRP's independent ranking system is the key to its years of success, ensuring only the best projects get funded. Take action & urge your legislators to restore full funding today!

LWCF full funding bill reintroduced

Sens. Baucus (MT), Burr (NC), and Wyden (OR) & 4 cosponsors have introduced a new bill, the “Land and Water Conservation Authorization and Funding Act of 2013,” to provide full, permanent and dedicated funding for LWCF. Please join us in asking Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray to renew their support and once again co-sponsor the bill!
